Chapter 3: The First Obstacle

I've booked into the motel. I'm now in the elevater pressing the button for the 5th floor. All the buildings in Sydney are so big! This is meant to be a budget motel and it's got 7 floors! Oh well, it's a big city I guess. I'm feeling really tired. As soon as I get into my room I'm finding the bed and getting some shut-eye. Tomorrow I'll-
A huge screeching sound interrupts my train of thought. I jump and cover my ears. The elevator comes to a sudden stop at the same time as the screeching and I look around, very quickly becoming afraid. The lights go out. The elevator music dissapears. I'm getting really worried. Suddenly the whole world is dark and quiet. I take my hands away from my ears and immediately use them to start banging on the door. Soon I'm yelling as well. Trying to stay calm. They'll find me. It's not as if they wouldn't notice that the elevator wasn't moving. Right?

It's an hour later. I'm sitting down on the floor, trying not to cry. This shouldn't be happening. Why did I have to be in this elavator? This isn't fair. Someone please help me. Help me! I'm suddenly banging on the walls again, yelling my heart out. But I'm stopped by a realisation. The elevator's moving again! Oh thank god! I'm safe! I'm going to be-... But wait. Why aren't the lights back on? Or that annoying music? And the elevator shouldn't be going this fast... Oh no! The elevator's falling! My stomach suddenly jumps into my throat. So this is it. The end. This is how I'm going to die. I'm thinking these morbid thoughts when there's a jolt. The elevator stops again. The jolt knocks me to the ground. That was a close call. I so HAVE to get out of here. I start trying to pry the automatic doors open. I'm just about to give up when I hear voices. Wait - voices? I must be going crazy! But no- these are real voices. Has someone come? Has someone finally come to rescue me? I start banging and yelling incase they don't know I'm here, whoever 'they' are. Probably emergency services. The doors are pried open and a man who looks to be in his 30's starts talking to me.
"Ma'am are you ok? We have to get you out of here. Take my hand." I'm thinking about how strange it feels to be called ma'am when I pass out from tiredness, shock and relief. Such relief...

Chapter 2 continued...

I'm getting off the train at the Sydney station. I buy a Mcdonalds lunch and walk back above ground. It's day 2 of my spectacular escape. I havn't heard anything, but I havn't had access to any of the media. I got to the next town yesterday, late into the night but the trains continue 24 hrs so I was still able to get out before midnight. For the first half hour I just sat there, getting paranoid, thinking that someone was watching me. But eventually I began to relax and soon enough fell asleep. After all, I was pretty tired, I had been moving all day, and it was a long day. But now, munching on a cheeseburger and wondering around, I feel totally awake. The train dropped me off just by darling harbour. It's a pretty cool place. I see a newspaper stand and buy a newspaper and a map of Sydney. Right here's the plan. A missing person report about me surely wouldn't have gotten to Sydney yet. It's only been a day. So: I'm going to wonder around for a while, take in the sights, then maybe an hour before it's supposed to get dark, I'll find the nearest motel and stay the night. Then tomorrow I'll think about where I'm going next. I'm going to keep a low profile, of course, but I'm not too worried. Maybe I'm taking this too lightly. I really don't want to be caught. I don't want to explain to the police and my parents, have to explain why I ran away. It's not like they'd understand. I hardly understand. But enough of that sad stuff. It's time to tour!

Chapter 2: The Adventure Begins

I've slowed down to a jog. I think I'm about halfway into town by now. My house (ex-house?) is pretty close but I've still been going for about an hour. So it's about 3 in the morning now. After running through the paddocks for a bit I made my way onto the main road, but I'm going to make sure I'm out of sight again by 5 o clock. Once in town I will head south. I'm going to go all the way to Sydney. I'm so excited! By now, of course, the nerves have kicked in. I am really nervous. Part of me keeps nagging the other part of me to turn back, go back home and get back into bed before it's too late, before someone notices. But the other part of me is bigger, stronger and very thirsty for adventure. That's the whole reason I left in the first place. I was happy at home, loved and welcomed by my family and friends. But I was stuck in a rutt. The same thing every day. It was boring and I felt like my life was going to be like this forever. I'd always dreamed of running away, going off to see the world and busking for money. Well, I'd finally worked up the guts to do it. The day after my 15th birthday was the day that I started my new life, the day my adventure begun. I'm very sorry to my family and friends. I know they'll worry. They'll search. But they won't find me. I can't put up with my old life any more. I'm starting a new life, and although I'll miss everyone, life goes on. I'll probably meet new people, and within time everyone from my old life will forget about me, or at least move on. I hope. Well, anyway, no use worrying about it now. I've made my move and I am NOT going back now, no matter what anyone says. No matter what I say...

Right, got to focus. I'm just on the edge of town. It's 4:30 am. I'm going to have to stick to back alleys soon. I'm going to keep moving on to the next town, and from there I'll be able to catch a train to Sydney. I might stay in Sydney for a few days, check it out, look at the Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge etc. Oh and don't worry, money isn't a problem. You see, I don't want to sound stuck up, but well, I can sing. I can sing and I'm good. It's earned me a few extra dollars in the past few years. According to most people, I was going high places. But although I enjoy singing, I don't think it's my thing. Anyway, like I said, my singing has earnt me quite a bit, and I'll always be able to use my voice if I need a bit more. So money isn't a problem. This isn't going to be a smooth ride, of course, but I think it is still going to be very enjoyable. I'll make it enjoyble.

Chapter 1: Taking The First Steps

My alarm blared through the silence and I instinctively slammed my hand down on the snooze button. Looked across at the time displayed on my clock. Sat up straight in bed and remembered why I had woken myself up at 2 o clock in the morning. Today was the day. It was finally going to happen. I got out from under the covers and silently dressed, psyching myself up for the big challenge that lay ahead of me. The challenge I had to face alone. Once dressed I put on my coat and grabbed my backpack, which would be all I had left in the world within a couple of minutes. That and the possesions it held inside. I crept out the back door and breathed in the fresh, cool air. One good thing about living in the country? The air is always fresh and clean. Shame I no longer live here. Well, not a shame really. This is how I planned it. I walked through the first few paddocks, quietly opening and shutting gates, leaving everything how it was. Then I ran. I ran and ran and ran like I've never run before. The cold air kept me going, it kept me alive. The darkness encouraged me, enticed me, invited me. And I ran towards it, excitement and adrenaline filling my whole body, with no room left to spare for nervousness. I had finally taken the first few steps. I had finally run away from my old life, to begin my new one. I shivered with anticipation as a thought bounced around inside my head. I couldn't stop thinking: 'my new life has begun.'
